About Kashipur | Uttarakhand


Introduction:
Kashipur is a city and a municipal board in Udham Singh Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is a legislative assembly constituency.

Geography and history :
Kashipur has an average elevation of 218 metres (715 feet).
Kashipur was known as Govishan or Govisana, during the time of Harsha (606–647 AD), when Xuanzang (631–641 AD) visited this region. The ruins of the large settlement of those days are still to be seen near the city. Kashipur was named after Kashinath Adhikari, the founder of the township and Governor of the pargana, one of the officers of the Chand Kings of Kumaonin the 16-17 century.

Poet Gumani Pant has written a poem on this town. Girital and Drona sagar are well known spots and are associated with the story of the Pandavas. The Chaiti mela is the best known fair of Kashipur. Today Kashipur is an important industrial township. In autumn (after monsoon) one can see the snowclad peaks of Trishul and its surroundings.

Culture and Society:
As of 2001 India census, Kashipur had a population of 92,978. Males constitute 53 % of the population and females 47 %. Kashipur has an average literacy rate of 68 %, higher than the national average of 59.5 %: male literacy is 73 %, and female literacy is 62 %. In Kashipur, 14 % of the population is under 6 years of age. Languages spoken are Punjabi, Kumaoni, Garhwali, Hindi and English.

Kashipur is quite a small town in Uttarakhand where industries have come up with a great pace the city currently lacks Quality Education Institutions, The city have a few good Educational Institutions including but these are restricted to only Intermediate Level, Recently few Private Colleges have come up but Radhe Hari Snatakottar Mahavidyalaya RH Govt. Poatgraduate College is the biggest College of higher education providing higher education to the people coming from various strata of society. Presently near about 7000 students are engaged in their studies of under graduate and postgrduate courses in various faculties. . ITI Kashipur is regarded one of the best ITI's in Uttarakhand and provides only Diploma Courses, Government polytechnic kahsipur is also providing great engineers for country. its a biggest and oldest polytechnic in Uttarakhand.

The Govt Of Uttarakhand's latest announcement for establishment of IIM in Kashipur have build up hopes for People of Kashipur and of the entire state.

Tourism:
Drona Sagar Lake At present a huge pond with lotus flowers is situated here. The pond is surrounded by temples of various deities. Earlier, there were 32 temples around the periphery of this pond. The excavated site at Drona Sagar is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Maa Bal Sundari Mandir Bal Sundari Mandir also known as Chaiti Mandir, is the most famous temple in Kashipur. During Navratras in March a grand fair is held here every year. The fair draws lakhs of pilgrims and devotees from far-flung areas. Devotees throng the temple to offer their prayers to the revered Goddess.The temple has a simple structure with a central dome housing the idol of the Devi Bal Sundari. The structure of the temple resembles a mosque which may be due to its construction during Mughal period. There is a legend which relates to the construction of this temple to Mughal themselves, hence the influence of Muslim architecture.

Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib is associated with the first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev ji who came here after having visited Nanak Mata and Nanak Puri. At that time, the Dhela river used to cause havoc in the city by flooding each year. When Guru ji reached this place, the local people were on the verge of leaving this place for safer grounds. Guru ji told them to be patient and advised them to remain there only. Thereafter, on the riverside, he started singing kirtan. As the kirtan was in progress, the river rose. Guru ji performed the ardas and the river, after touching Guru ji's feet, receded, moved to a distance away from the town. It is said that since then, the river has never flooded the city again. It is also said that earlier the name of the river was Swaran river and that when Guru ji threw a clod (dhela) into the river the name of the river was changed to Dhela river. The birthdays of Guru Nanak Dev ji and Guru Gobind Singh ji, the martyrdom day of Guru Arjun Dev ji and Baisakhi are the main gurpurabs celebrated here.

Transportation:
Thenearest Airport is 72 km away at Pantnagar. Kashipur is connecte to Ramnagar, Kathgodam, Moradabad, Bareilly, Lucknow and Delhi by rail network. Kashipur is connected by road with all the major cities of the state and region. Kashinath Adhikari was the first founder of this city. It is located at national highway NH-74. Delhi is about 225 km and Haridwar also above 176 km apart from Kashipur.
